  • ACL tear – A torn anterior cruciate ligament (one of two crisscrossing knee joint ligaments that help connect the thighbone and shinbone), often resulting from overextension and direct blows to the knee.
  • Arthritis of the knee – There are three types of arthritis that may affect the knee joint: osteoarthritis (degenerative), rheumatoid arthritis (inflammatory) and post-traumatic arthritis (resulting from an injury). Osteoarthritis is the most common.
  • Bursitis of the knee: kneecap (prepatellar) – Bursitis is a common, temporary injury in which a cushioning sac (bursa) is inflamed near the tendons of large joints. Usually caused by overuse, although it may also be the result of arthritis, diabetes, gout, tendinitis or thyroid disease.
  • Dislocated shoulder – Since the shoulder is capable of such a wide range of motion, it tends to dislocate more easily, causing pain and instability. There are complete dislocations and partial dislocations (head of upper arm bone is only partially out of the socket).
  • Fractures of the shoulder blade (scapula) – Shoulder blade fractures are fairly rare, and usually caused by high-energy, blunt trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents and falls from great heights.
  • Growth plate fractures – Growth plate fractures often occur during infancy, childhood and adolescence, striking the soft, sensitive area found at either end of a child’s bones.
  • Hamstring muscle strain – Also known as a pulled hamstring, this is a common injury for athletes, especially those who run and sprint in their sport. It affects the muscles at the back of the thigh and is often treated non-surgically.
  • Knee ligament sprains and tears – Sprains and tears to the knee ligaments, which connect the thighbone to the lower leg bones, are among the most common sports injuries.
  • Lumbar strain – Lower-back injury typically accompanied by soreness and spasms from damaged tendons and muscles.
  • Meniscus tear– A common knee injury affecting the rubbery, C-shaped discs that cushion and provide shock absorption between the knee bones.
  • Muscle strains in the thigh – Active people frequently suffer muscle strains in the hamstring and quadriceps of the thigh because of the wide variety of movements that take place in this area. Strain injuries range from minor pulls to major muscle and tendon tears.
  • Patellar tendonitis – Also known as "jumper’s knee,"  an inflamed patellar tendon often caused by overuse (especially jumping on hard surfaces).
  • Rotator cuff tear – This is a common injury for adults that weakens the shoulder and disrupts everyday activities.
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) – A common sports injury characterized by dull pain in the point where the thigh and knee connect.
  • Separated shoulder – A stretch or tear injury to one or more of the ligaments supporting the joint between the collarbone and shoulder blade, where a great deal of movement happens.
  • Shin splints – Stress injury of the tibia (shinbone) resulting in pain and inflammation, usually caused by overuse during exercise, repetitive activities or sports.
  • Stress fractures – A fracture caused by overuse, commonly due to sports and other intense activities.
  • Unstable kneecap – When the kneecap (patella) is no longer properly sitting in the groove of the knee, it can cause pain and prevent all sorts of everyday activities like walking, running and even sitting or standing.
